Part 1: Live ( is OK)

Difficulty: As a youngest among the four siblings and as a first time traveller abroad, it’s the anxiety of doing all things alone and adjusting to the new chapter of my life.

Challenge: Walking everyday for 20-30mins from my apartment to school. However, it’s a good form of exercise too.

Obstacle: Filipinos have close familty ties. Homesickness is hard to battle but my colleagues especially my coordinator makes it bearable since they’ve been checking on me and making sure I am okay.

Part 2: Curriculum and instruction.... (3 or 4 difficulties)

Difficulty:

1. Differentiated instructions - My learners vary from beginners to highly proficient. As a teacher, I need to anaylze how they learn so I can tailor-fit activities suitable to them

2. Crafting activities engaging to students - English is a fun subject but it might be complicated for ESL learners. The greatest challenge is thinking outside the box of what kind of activity to use in class or how to deliver the lesson to catch student’s interest.

3. Inculcating English lesson not just on the cognitive aspect but also on the affective aspect - Learning English is not just being able to memorize the grammar patterns or memorizing vocabularies. More than that, it’s about appreciating how useful it is and how wonderful the language is — it serves us our vehicle to go around the world by communicating using the English language. I always want my learners to appreciate and instill that learning English gives them a lot of opportunities. I do not want them to memorize it but I want them to be confident in it.

Challenge: The three abovementioned difficulties are challenges but I always see to it that I can manage to do it in class so I can greatly contribute as a Foreign English teacher in the school.

Obstacle: Sometimes, I ran out of ideas especially on the engaging activities but I always try my best to think more and be flexible.

Part 2: Colleague Interaction.... (3 or 4 difficulties)

Difficulty:

1. Most of them only speaks basic English

2. I really want to communicate to them and have a friendly chat but I understand that there’s limited chance

3. I want to learn Chinese so I can communicate to them but I don’t think i’d be able to learn it on my free time since I have other things to do

Challenge: Getting to know all of them not just what their names are but also learning more about them

Obstacle: The language itself is the obstacle but I don’t think befriending them requires a language. I certainly know how awesome they are because of their smiles, politeness and how they all offer help if I need it.

Part 2: Teacher-Student interaction.... (3 or 4 difficulties)

Difficulty:

1. I handle three grade levels — Grade 3, 4 and 6. Grade 3 learners are very attentive in class and I can easily get them to be involved in activities. They love games and rewards. Since they are the youngest among the grade levels I handle, I need to double my efforts in getting their attention and checking their outputs so I can guide them even more.

2. Grade 4 learners are the playful one’s. They love the class and learning English in general but sometimes they get easily distracted with their classmates and it affects their attention span.

3. Grade 6 learners are a bit difficult when it comes to their behaviour. Among the three grade levels, they’re the oldest. Somehow, not all of them shows great enthusiasm in the class. It’d quite challenging since some of them won’t answer because they are shy or they answer but in a very low voice that I can barely hear it. I think, what they need to have is the confidence and being able to conquer their shyness in speaking English.

Challenge: Among the three grade levels, I must say that the grade 6 learners needs more attention since they’re almost moving to Junior High School. They need to gain more confidence in learning English and appreciate how wonderful it is.

Obstacle: Creating or using differentiated instructions suitable for each learners’ needs.
